"Hegel's Mask" by Thomas Hunkeler — An inquiry into the mystery of Iché’s masks

The year 2025 saw a major publication for the understanding of René Iché’s work. In his book Le Masque de Hegel(Hegel's Mask), published by Le Seuil, Professor Thomas Hunkeler provides a fascinating investigation into one of the most intriguing chapters of modern sculpture.

The book explores in detail the origins of the famous masks of André Breton and Paul Éluard, created by René Iché in the late 1920s. Moving beyond myths, Hunkeler uncovers the "true story" behind these objects, situated at the intersection of Surrealism and the search for pure form. He highlights how Iché, in the heart of Montparnasse, succeeded in capturing the essence of these "idol-faces."

For admirers of René Iché, this work offers a fresh and well-documented look at the complex relationships between the sculptor and the leaders of the Surrealist movement, while confirming the symbolic power of his portraits.

"René Iché. Works, writings, interviews" — The Definitive Monograph

We are pleased to announce a major publication for the study of René Iché’s work. This book features the final biographical essay by the renowned art critic Sarane Alexandrian (1927-2009), completed shortly before his passing.

Tracing Iché’s journey as a leading figure of the 20th century, Alexandrian provides essential keys to understanding a sculptor whose works offer multiple layers of meaning. For the first time, this volume also gathers René Iché’s own writings and manifestos, along with interviews (from the INA archives and Les Lettres françaises). These primary sources are presented in a bilingual French-English edition, supported by comprehensive scientific appendices.

This project was made possible with the support of ADAGP and the René Iché Archives.

Technical Specifications:

  • Author: Sarane Alexandrian

  • Publisher: Éditions Galerie Pauline Pavec

  • Details: 280 pages | 16.5 x 22 cm
